How to shape textile objects without sewing nor gluing?
In
the textile industry, a textile object is usually created by
using several pieces of fabric cut then sewn or glued with
each other, sometimes assembled with other materials. Thus,
textile design and product design are often seen as two very
distinct fields: textile designers design fabrics (flat
surfaces), product designers pick in the vast array of
existant fabrics to design their products.
Putting aside
the common textile shaping techniques, this experimental
project explores other ways of designing and creating textile
objects.
Therefore, we focused on three objects (a cap and two pairs of shoes) and we designed for each object a specific fabric, thinking ahead its future shaping, using traditional weaving techniques mixed with emerging technologies such as 3D printing. We also explored new ways of weaving and developped a range of experimental surfaces.
